Aviar vs Judge: flight numbers and which putter to choose

The Innova Aviar and the Dynamic Discs Judge are both speed-2 putters with 0 turn and 1 fade. The two real differences are glide and the rim: the Judge is rated one point more glide (4 vs 3) and has a bead under its rim, while the Aviar Putt & Approach is beadless. Choose the one that feels better in your putting grip. If you cannot try both, pick the Aviar for a smooth rim edge and the Judge if you like a bead under your fingers.

The Aviar numbers come from Innova's Aviar page and disc comparison chart. Innova identifies this version as beadless. The Judge numbers come from Dynamic Discs' Judge collection, where listings such as the Classic Burst Judge and Classic Hybrid Judge show 2 / 4 / 0 / 1. We checked them on October 8, 2026.

Each brand rates its own discs, so a one-point difference between two companies is a rough guide, not a precise measurement. The ratings also describe the mold in general, not one plastic or weight.

The bead: the difference you feel first

A bead is a small ridge on the underside of the rim, at the outer edge where your fingertips sit on a putt. A bead gives your fingertips something to find on the rim. A beadless edge is smooth all the way round. Which one feels better is a matter of preference.

Dynamic Discs' own pages show that the Judge has one. Its EMac Judge was made for players who wish the Judge had less bead and a little less fade. The Aviar Putt & Approach has no bead, which is why it is our first putting putter for someone who wants a beadless disc.

Neither is better. What matters is how the rim feels in your normal putting grip and whether the disc releases cleanly when you putt. That is personal, so the numbers cannot settle it.

Glide 3 vs 4: does it matter?

For putting at the basket, hardly at all. On a short putt the disc does not fly long enough for glide to change much.

On longer throws it can. Glide is the rating for how well a disc holds its height. A higher number suggests the Judge should stay up a little longer on a soft approach. Dynamic Discs describes it as a throwing putter that flies straight and glides a long way. The Aviar's lower glide rating points to a disc that comes down a little sooner, which can help on short approaches where you want it to stop. Both have the same rated fade, so the finish should be similar. That is our reading of the ratings, not a measured flight test.

If you mainly want a disc for approach shots, throw both on the same line and see which one lands where you meant it to.

How to choose in your hand

If a local store or a friend has both, a few minutes with each tells you more than this page:

  1. Hold each in your normal putting grip and feel where your fingers sit on the rim.
  2. Make several putts from the same short distance with each disc.
  3. Notice which one leaves your hand cleanly without catching or slipping.
  4. Throw a couple of soft approaches with each and compare where they land.

Then pick one and stick with it. Our disc golf putting guide explains why a simple, repeatable stroke matters more than the putter, and our store directory can help you find a shop where you can hold a disc before buying.

Other Aviars and Judges

Both names cover several molds. This page compares the Aviar Putt & Approach. Innova also makes the Aviar3, the overstable AviarX3 and other Aviar models, and they are not interchangeable. On the Dynamic Discs side, the EMac Judge is a separate mold, and the Warden is rated 2 / 4 / 0 / 0.5, with a little less fade than the Judge. Check the full name on the listing before you buy.

Sources and scope

Sources checked October 8, 2026: Innova's Aviar page, disc comparison chart and starter set page; Dynamic Discs' Judge collection, EMac Judge collection and the Classic Burst Judge and Classic Hybrid Judge listings. This guide compares manufacturer ratings and rim design. Plastics, weights and runs can feel and fly differently, and DiscField has not run a controlled test of these putters.
